Still with the SCAT campus (Somerset College of Arts and Technology) in Taunton, this wooden construction seems to form the outer frame for a set of stairs.
The actual stairs inside seemed to be locked off so I could not actually climb them which was a bit mean of them, but it looked like they gave access to the roof of the reception building which they are likely trying to prevent.

My Granny made the classic Chex mix every year around this time, but always modified it to include my favorite ingredients. In her last years, she was determined that I learned how to make it just like her so that I wouldn’t be without one of my favorite holiday treats when she was gone. She taught me well…this batch is almost gone thanks to kids and visitors…and me of course.
3 cups square rice cereal
3 cups square corn cereal
3 cups square wheat cereal (I sneak some extra wheat ones in because they are my favorite)
1 cup prestzels
2 cups mixed nuts
1 cup bagel chips (optional)
10 tablespoons butter (no tub stuff…only unsalted real butter)
1/4 cup worchestershire sauce (my fave flavor for this)
1 1/2 Tablespoons seasoning salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
-preheat oven to 250 degrees
-in one large or two medium casserole pans/dishes, melt butter
-combine seasonings & worchestershire in melted butter
-stir in cereal, nut, pretzles, etc…coat well with mix
-bake for one hour, remove and stir every 15 minutes
-cool/drain on paper towels
-store in air tight container
I’ll sometimes add the spicy orange Chinese rice crescent shaped crunchy things that are yummy.

Every season has its scourge. For quite awhile it was ticks but these have finally abated. Now that things are drying out, foxtails and flies are the pest-de-jour. Under the weight of the morning dew the grasses are bent low in waves and whorls, looking like an animal has made a bed among them. But when they have dried in the sun, they bob up and their the seeds become feathery darts which deposit themselves by the hundreds in socks and shoes, poking and scratching ankles and feet. I’ve had to throw out a couple of pairs of socks that were just too thick with foxtails to pick them all out. The other irritant right now are flies – horse flies, deer flies, sand flies. They are worst near flowering plants which they share with the honey bees and sweat bees. But anywhere where it is not too dry and not too breezy these flies skitter about, forming small clouds above the head of any hapless hiker. Completely unphased by waving hands, these have to be knocked off and their bites itch for several days.

Some trees – scratch that – most trees down Granville Street have been chopped down in order to create more transit downtown. I thought I’d liven up the shots by taking pictures of the vandalized stumps with bokeh in the background. I guess that’s making lemonade, is it not?
